Progesterone

Progesterone is a female hormone. It is released by the ovaries after ovulation to prepare the lining of the uterus (endometrium) to receive and sustain the fertilized egg and thus permit pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, progesterone (and estrogen) levels fall, resulting in menstruation.

When progesterone levels drop, it can cause symptoms like hot flashes, trouble sleeping, mood changes, or irregular bleeding.
