Vaginal Dryness and Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM)

Vaginal dryness is a common issue after menopause. It's the main symptom of a condition called genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), which used to be called vaginal atrophy or atrophic vaginitis.

When estrogen levels drop during menopause, the tissues in the vagina can become thinner, drier, and more easily irritated. This can lead to discomfort and pain during sex (called dyspareunia). Inline content unavailable

The good news is that there are several ways to manage these symptoms:

  • Vaginal moisturizers (like K-Y Liquibeads or Replens): These help keep the vagina moist and are used regularly, even when you're not having sex.

  • Vaginal lubricants (like Astroglide or Sliquid): These are used just before sex to reduce friction and make intercourse more comfortable. They can be used with moisturizers.

  • Low-dose vaginal estrogen (in cream, tablet, or ring form): This helps restore the health of the vaginal tissue. Even if you're already on hormone therapy pills or patches, your doctor might still recommend this if dryness continues.

  • Ospemifene (Osphena): A pill that helps treat painful sex linked to vaginal thinning. It’s not recommended for people who have had breast cancer or are at high risk.

  • DHEA suppository: Inserted into the vagina at night, this can help maintain vaginal elasticity and pliability.

Having regular sexual activity or vaginal stimulation—even without a partner—can also help keep the vaginal tissues healthy after menopause.Inline content unavailable
